MOTOR VEHICLE SERVICES

Alberta 's laws help to provide the safety measures and proper management of our highways and other roadways. It is mandatory for a driver/operator to hold a valid operator license for all types of motorized vehicles that are being operated on City roads and highways. In order to operate a vehicle on all city roads, highways and properties vehicles/trailers must be registered at Alberta Registry.

Motor Vehicle Registration FAQs

Motor vehicle services should be done in person. If the individual(s) can not apply in person a letter of authorization must be provided to an individual acting on their behalf with accurate and with proper documents.

1. What documents do I need to provide to register my vehicles?

- To register a vehicle, you will require proof of ownership (bill of sale, lease agreement), proof of valid insurance and identification. If the vehicle is new, you will also require a new vehicle information statement (NVIS); if the vehicle was imported into Canada , you will require a Vehicle Import Form from Transport Canada. Used Vehicles previously registered outside of the province require a safety inspection.

Note: Insurance MUST be in the name(s) of the registrant(s)

2. What do I need to renew my vehicles?

- The Government sends out a courtesy letter to renew your license plates two months prior to the renewal date. The form that the Government sends out along with valid insurance card will have to be provided. If you have lost this form then the valid insurance alone with the correct plate number will also get you renewed.

Note: Insurance MUST be in the name(s) of the registrant(s)

3. I live out of province but work in Alberta. Do I have to exchange my plates for an Alberta one?

- No. If your residence is not in Alberta you do not have to exchange provided you have valid insurance and non-commercial vehicle registration in your home jurisdiction for up to 183 calendar days you will have to register in Alberta.

4. How can I find out if a vehicle was stolen?

- The Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) website allows the public to check the ‘stolen' status of a vehicle using either a vehicle identification number (VIN) or a license plate. The vehicle records in this database are updated every day and the property files are updated every Tuesday morning. It is important to note that even if you get a positive response to your search, it does not necessarily mean the item is stolen.
If you do get a positive response, the items' status should them be confirmed with your local police.
