Driver/Operator
Licence Classes
*** Note -
the information presented here is a general guide and must not be used
for making legal decisions.
There
are seven (7) licence classes in Alberta some of which can be combined
for certain purposes like the ability to drive both a two-axle vehicle
and a motorcycle.
Most
classes require adequate scores on knowledge and road tests before the
licence is granted. There is also one identification class used solely
for ID purposes that is available to Alberta residents 12 years old or
older that do not already have an Alberta operators licence. Most services
require parent/guardian consent for people under 18 years old.
To
operate vehicles that are equipped with air brakes, an air brake endorsement
is required except for operators of some single-motor farm vehicles.
All driver/operator services require acceptable identification before any
services can be started.

Eligibility
Only
residents of Alberta who are lawfully entitled to be in Alberta and whose
primary residence is in Alberta. Immigration documents will be reviewed
in other cases to determine residency status. Student & employment
visas will normally be granted residency for the period indicated on the
visa.
New
Arrivals to Alberta
For
those who have just moved into our province, you have a period of three
(3) months to use a valid operator's licence from outside of Alberta.
Within that first three (3) months of taking up residency in Alberta you
must apply for a new Alberta operator's licence at a registry office and
surrender your old licence. It is illegal to hold more than one valid
operator's licence.
Any
valid Canadian operator's licence will be exchanged for an Alberta licence
without testing and the stipulation that Class 1, 2, or 4 licences (or
their equivalents) must provide a suitable medical report that has been
completed within the last six (6) months and pass a vision screening test.
Class 1 licence holders must have an air brake endorsement prior to having
their licence exchanged. A valid U.S. operator's licence will be
exchanged only for the Class 5 and 6 equivalents without testing and all
other classes must pass complete testing. U.S. citizens will also have
to provide adequate immigration documentation to meet Alberta residency
requirements.
Tourists
to Alberta
Any
non-canadian residents that have a valid international driver licence issued
outside of Canada can use this licence for 12 months or until expiry, whichever
happens first. All tourists are permitted to drive for a period of three
(3) months upon arriving in Alberta using their valid licence from any
country.
Medical
Requirements
It
is your legal obligation to report any medical condition that may affect
your ability to operate a motor vehicle. In addition, the Alberta
government has mandated the following schedule for supplying medical reports
for each operator class:
-
Classes
1, 2, and 4
-
initial
application and renewal
-
every
five years to 45 years old
-
every
two years from 45 to 65 years old
-
every
year from 65 years old
-
Classes
3, 5, 6, and 7
-
initial
application and renewal when 75 to 77 years old are issued licences which
normally expire on 80th birthday
-
every
two years from 78 years old
Knowledge
Tests
These
tests can be written in a registry office (like ours) without an appointment
for classes 1,2,3,4,6,7. Note - A Class 5 licence is obtained
by passing a Class 5 road test and reclassing a Class 7 licence, therefore,
there is no knowledge test for a Class 5.
*
Note -There are three (3) Operator's Licence handbooks available free of
charge
at our office that should be studied carefully before testing:
-
All classes
including cars and light trucks
-
Large
trucks, tractor trailers, ambulances, taxis and buses
-
Motorcycles,
mopeds, & power bikes
Road
Tests
When
you're ready to try the road test you must book an appointment and purchase

supplying a suitable vehicle for your road test.

valid
insurance, plates, and registration
-
working
signals, horn, speedometer, parking brake, doors, seatbelts, mirrors, etc.

-
operate
the vehicle in reverse
-
maintain
speed at proper levels
-
Signal,
turn, change lanes, etc.
